The book “Codes for Mass
Data Storage Systems” by Emmy Award-winning Kees A. Schouhamer Immink,
published in 1999, has become the coding standard for our profession. As so many new relevant publications,
including patents and survey papers, have been published in the five years
since the first edition, an update was considered necessary.
The second edition of the
coding classic provides you with the most comprehensive, up-to-date survey of modern
coding techniques for recorders along with practical advice on how to implement
them, authored by the world's leading authority in this field. About 50%
additional references, including which many patents and patent applications,
mostly younger than five years old, have been included.
Featuring around 100
figures, 80 examples, 400 key references including 80 basic patents, and
detailed descriptions of channel codes of major recording devices such as
Compact Disc (CD), DVD, etc. “Codes for Mass Data Storage Systems” is an
essential reference handbook to engineers and researchers active in digital
magnetic and optical recording. It will also be useful for advanced courses in
information theory and digital communications.
The author has been widely
recognized for his meritorious contributions to digital recording theory and
practice. He received a Knighthood
from Queen Beatrix. He has also received the IEEE Edison Medal, the AES Gold
Medal, and Hollywood's greatest honors: an Emmy Award from the National
Television Academy and the SMPTE Progress Medal, and was inducted into the
Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame.
